Janis, Center Manager

"I love Sri Lanka because I can ride in Lycra all year round with great air and water temperatures. The lagoon is super smooth and shallow, so the kite spot is perfect for anyone to make good progress. My favourite way to end a successful kite day is in the beautiful pool at the lodge and playing cards socially in the evening."

Kitespots & Kiteschool

In the summer season the wind blows from south west with 16-33 knots, sometimes a little gusty and most of the times nonstop. The main spot during summer is situated just a short trip by our shuttle boat at a small headland. Advanced riders can (depending on the wind direction) launch directly in front of your booked accommodation and ride downwind to the KiteWorldWide spot. There we have set up a KiteWorldWide cottage for you to relax between the kite sessions.

During winter time you always take our shuttle boat, which goes multiple times a day and is free of charge to the other side of the lagoon. There you get the taste of the first class freestyle spots. In winter the wind comes from the opposite direction, meaning north east. It is less strong and round about 20 knots, making it perfect for beginners and intermediates.

Although the bottom is fine sand, we recommend wearing neoprene shoes, especially for beginners, as there are the odd sharp shell or coral in the bottom. You have to get used to the underwater plants, but they are neither slippery nor a hindrance.

As the tide is very low the lagoon is kiteable at all tides. Wind guaranteed, more space than you can imagine and no obstacles turn this spot into something perfect. Can it get any better than this?

Accommodation

FIND THE PERFECT KITE ACCOMMODATION FOR YOUR NEXT STAY IN SRI LANKA

KITEWORLDWIDE LAGOON LODGE KALPITIYA

A lodge, right at the lagoon with comfortable air conditioned rooms and swimming pool in the garden. The lodge was built by a German builder and his Sri Lankan wife. We had already been in contact with many accommodations at this amazing spot, but somehow they didn't really fit into our concept. The new lodge is completely different, and we took it over immediately to give it that certain KiteWorldWide DNA.

You can expect modern bungalows that still fit into the surroundings, each with four comfortable rooms.ll rooms in the bungalows have a view of the lagoon and their own terrace or balcony. Especially the rooms on the upper floor offer a breathtaking 180 degree view over the lagoon. Our pool is located in the garden, surrounded by other rooms to the left and right. Here, country-typical furnishings are combined with the romantic charm of a pool house in an ultra-modern way. A separate restaurant area and chill out corner, as well as various loungers and sun chairs are also located on the premises. We also have a volleyball court at the back of the lodge and, of course, the kite centre with storage for your equipment.

CATERING

Due to the limited number of restaurants in Kalpitiya we offer you a delicious full board service. That means we serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.

In the morning you get a tropical breakfast with fresh fruits, bread, pancakes and different egg dishes as well as marmalade & honey. You will be served fresh coffee, tea and delicious fresh juices. At lunchtime we offer a main course energy rich with carbohydrates for giving you enough power for the afternoon kite session. When you get back from the kitespot we serve tea and a little snack in the chill-out-area of the Lodge. In the evenings we make a barbecue most of the time, with fresh fish, salad, curry, vegetables, fresh bread and rice.

Extra activities

OTHER ACTIVITIES BESIDES KITESURFING

Trips can be booked on-site

Yoga and massages

Directly in the lodge, with a view of the lagoon, we offer yoga depending on your needs. A local yoga teacher with many years of training in various forms of yoga comes to the KiteWorldWide Lagoon Lodge (the yoga lesson is individually tailored to the experience and fitness of the participants). If you are a bit tense after a long day of kiting, you can book a massage appointment directly at the lodge.

Kitesafari Downwinder Dream Spot

This trip is dedicated to the more advanced kitesurfer, the session is a whopping 41 kilometers downwind. First of all we will go by boat to the small village of Keerimundal which is situated at the Dream Spot. There you will find a remote beach with the best flat water in the area. Here you can get crazy with freestyle and big air. On the other side of the 100m wide sandbank you can play in the waves of the beautifull blue indian ocean. For those who dont kite you will have the opportunity to go snorkeling. Afterwards we will make a downwinder until the end of the headland, with the rescue boat at your side all the time. Meanwhile small waves and flat water spots will alternate and you can enjoy the uniqueness of the landscape of Sri Lanka. After a little snack we will head back with our boat at sunset, a perfect end to the perfect day in paradise.

Junglesafari-Boat trip into the Wilpattu National Park

Come with us into the wonderful Wilpattu National Park which is literally just around the corner. As we don’t want to drive around the whole lagoon it would just take so much time, we simply take the most direct route by boat. Here you can enjoy the nature on a guided tour, watching elephants, crocodiles, monitor lizards, apes and many other species. After a little snack and a swim stop we head back so that you still have the whole afternoon for a kite session.

Dolphin- and Whale watching

Close by you have the opportunity to watch big pods of dolphin in their natural surrounding between November and March. You even can see whales with a bit of luck when they are on their way from the Gulf of Mannar and pass by the coast really close to the beach. The best time is November/December and March/April. You need to depart before sunrise but when you come back you still have the whole afternoon for a kite session.

Anuradhapura – the forgotten city

What you should definitely not miss is Anuradhapura, one of the oldest royal cities in Sri Lanka which has been hidden and forgotten for a long time. It is now an UNESCO heritage. In less than 2 hours you reach the city which is surrounded by monasteries and water reservoirs, presenting such impressive buildings that you can compare them to the pyramids of Gizeh. What you should also visit is the plant shoot of the Bodhi tree under which Siddhartha found his enlightenment. Monks surround the shrines while praying, families making offerings. Here you can discover and experience buddhism in its most natural form.
You need a passport with a validity of at least 6 months. Additionally you need to order a visa (check visa section).
You can apply for a visa online in advance or you can apply for it at the airport. Both ways work out.
The costs for the visa are 35,-US$.
In general you have the possibility to fly there and back for 600€. The airlines we would recommend are Turkish Airlines and KLM due to the good sports baggage regulations.
The traveling time will be around 12-20 hours, depending on your departure airport and your connection.
We are happy to organize your transfer to Kalpitiya by minibus.
The price for a return trip is 220€ per car (max. 4 persons) and takes about 3 hours per way.
The current exchange rate is 1€ = approx. 230 LKR.
We cannot accept Visa or MasterCard payments at the lodge. However, you can easily pay for all drinks, activities and excursions in euros on site. All additional kite lessons or downwind trips can be paid directly to our KiteWorldWide team via PayPal.

We cannot accept payments with Visa or Mastercard in the lodge. An ATM is nearby in Kalpitiya (about 10 minutes with the TukTuk).
Sri Lanka is still one of the most affordable holiday destinations. Trips and drinks are quite inexpensive.

You will need a maximum of 10-20 € per day for drinks, as we offer a full range including water.
Yoga and massages are currently around 10€ per hour. Excursions between 30-40€ per person.

Wifi is available in the restaurant and bar. However, it is not the fastest and may not be enough for a Skype conference e.g.. You don’t have WLAN in your rooms.
The electricity flows with 220 – 240 Volt AV.
  • Passport

  • Sunscreen (we recommend LSF30 and waterproof) and Aprés Sun Lotion

  • Beach towel and Flip-Flops

  • Light clothing (jumper, trousers for the evening)

  • Kitesurf beginners, who will be likely to walk in the lagoon, should bring thin neoprene shoes

  • For summer, boardshorts are enough. In Fall we recommend a shorty and in winter a full length wetsuit.

  • Travel adapter for the power socket

  • Kite Equipment (for guests who have not booked a course or rental equipment

An advanced male kitesurfer (level 6 or 7) with 85kg needs:
in winter:           9 sqm – 12 sqm (mostly used size 12 sqm)
in summer:        7 sqm – 10 sqm (mostly used size 9 sqm)

Our kite school with German speaking instructors is VDWS licensed and equipped with brand new material from Core. The school is located directly on the spot and you are there after a short boat tour of about 10 minutes. The kite service includes launch and landing service.
The shallow water lagoon is worth a trip for all kiters. Beginners as well as advanced kitesurfers benefit from the good conditions. Since the lagoon is connected to the sea and therefore currents and moon courses also have influence on it, there can be jellyfish and various shells in the lagoon from time to time. We therefore recommend long leggings and neoprene shoes for kiting. Especially for those who are still in the water a lot or will run a lot.
