Information

Kite Season:

Tatajuba is a kitesurfing paradise for those seeking a more remote getaway where you can kite from your door and kick back on the palm-fringed beaches. Wake up, dip your toes in the sand and walk barefoot through the gardens to breakfast: relax, there’s no need for shoes here.

Tatajuba is situated on the mouth of a river, this small almost forgotten place lies west of Jericoacoara, and is reminiscent of how Combuco used to be when it was a small fishing village. Tatajuba has a vast shallow water area with the most reliable and strongest wind in Brazil that blows all the way from June until the end of January. There’s heaps of space on the water to cruise around or perfect your moves, and even at high tide, you can find shallow enough areas for you to stand.

Our kite centre and KiteWorldWide Beachclub is located close to your accommodation at the river mouth. Just a few hundred meters further down the river you’ll find another awesome spot with small ‘kicker waves’, and only four kilometres away you can access a huge kiteable freshwater lagoon. You can kite all day then unwind with new friends that feel like you’ve known each other for life. Sip cool caipirinhas, shoot some pool and enjoy one of our famous local BBQs while taking in the beauty of the surroundings.
If you want to party, nearby Jeri is the place to head to and worth a trip, or if you’d rather chill out after a hard day’s kiting, there are plenty of laid-back terraces to enjoy a freshly made caipirinha.

Other Activities Besides Kitesurfing (not included in package price)

If you fancy a change from being on the water, you can speed through the enormous dunes in Funil with a beach buggy. If you’d prefer something more extreme then try out sandboarding down them!

Tatajuba is located between the world-famous Jericoacoara (30km away), and the fishing community of Camocim (25km away) which are both worth exploring. You can reach either by public transportation or via beach buggy.

Jericoacoara

Jericoacoara, or ‘Jeri’ as it’s known, is famed for its relaxed atmosphere and wild nightlife if you want to let off some steam. The party really gets going around midnight and can go all night long if you’ve got the stamina for it!

Although Jeri only consists of four sandy streets, there is an astonishing number of restaurants, pousadas, and small interesting shops as well as kitesurfing of course.

In Jeri, there’s the possibility to learn Capoeira on the beach (the popular Brazilian battle dance), go sandboarding in the dunes, or even horseback riding.

Camocim

Camocim is located at the mouth of the Rio Coreaú on the border of Piaui known as the ‘land of endless possibilities’. Here you’ll find all amenities such as a post office, banks, hospitals, shops, a bus station and lots of different hotels and pousadas. The market and village life are definitely worth a visit!

Please remember that you need a valid passport for the trip to Brazil, which is valid for at least 6 months.
If you do not have German citizenship, please check with the Brazilian embassy about the entry requirements of your country of origin.

Airport: Fortaleza (FOR)

TAP run flights from most European cities and fly direct to Fortaleza via Lisbon. You can choose to spend one night in Lisbon, or consider taking a transfer with a waiting time of approximately 4 hours.

Flights to Fortaleza are provided via KLM (via Amsterdam), TAP (via Lisbon), Air France (via Paris) and Latam (via Madrid) and typically cost between €600 and €1200 depending on the time of year.
From our own experience, we recommend you allow at least 2 hours for transfer, otherwise, there is a danger your luggage won’t be transported to the next plane in time.If changing planes in Recife or Salvador you should allow at least 3-4 hours transfer time as you’ll have to check out, pass through immigration and check-in again to continue your flight with local airlines.

After you arrive at Fortaleza airport, Brazil, you’ll have two options to get to the KiteWorldWide Pousada in Tatajuba. Either:
Take a direct airport transfer with a well-established company (they will pick you up in a minivan): approximately 4 hours drive
Or
Take the bus from Fortaleza to either Jijoca, Jericoacoara, or Camocim where you’ll be picked up by a pousada employee in a buggy (approximately 30 minutes). The busses leave directly from the airport and are extremely comfortable with air conditioning and reclining chairs. The bus trip takes about 5 to 6.5 hours depending on the destination, and costs between €15 and €20 per person one way.

It’s best to pay on-site at the Pousada with Brazilian Real. You may find this currency converter helpful: https://www.oanda.com/currency/converter/
Credit cards are accepted but come with a fee of 7%, plus a possible foreign transaction surcharge depending on the credit card company.
Please bring enough cash with you for the local beach bars and supermarket.

Per day you should calculate about 15-20€ for food and drinks.

Insider tip: take some cash down to the kite centre, most of the days a fisherman is passing by with fresh oysters. He puts some lime and pepper on it and you can sip those delicious proteins into your body.

  • Passport and other travel documents
  • Sunscreen (we recommend LSF50 and waterproof) and Aprés Sun Lotion
  • Beach towel and Flip-Flops
  • Light clothing (jumper, trousers for the evening)
  • Kitesurf beginners, who will be likely to walk in the lagoon, should bring thin neoprene shoes
  • Bikini and boardshorts are enough in Brazil.
  • Kite Equipment (for guests who have not booked a course or rental equipment)

The KWW Pousada offers free Wifi in the restaurant.
Standard European plug sockets (type f) are used throughout.

An intermediate male adult (80kg) ideally needs 5qm – 9qm. Most often you will need a 7m kite.
Our school is fully VDWS licensed and courses can be taken in various languages.
We use equipment from Core and Flysurfer, we also offer storage for your equipment.

General information

All the useful things to know as you travel to Tatajuba Brasil

Country and People

Tatajuba is one of the most beautiful and untouched places along the northern coast of Ceará in the northeast of Brazil. This small community lies about 300nkm northwest of Fortaleza and is surrounded by huge white sand dunes, coconut palms, mangroves and small freshwater lagoons.
The 500 inhabitants peacefully make their living from fishing, raising cattle and traditional agriculture.

In the 1980s Tatajuba was slowly covered by the steadily moving dunes which lead to the reconstruction of the entire village on the other side of the lagoon. At the end of the town, you’ll discover the large hardened dune called ‘Duna Encantado’, or ‘the cursed dune’, where many inhabitants believe an old pirate ship is buried underneath it. According to an old legend, you can still hear the old pirate songs at night…
